Annual Senior Day Event Connects CHS and LVHS Seniors with Post-Graduation Opportunities

Annual Senior Day Event Connects CHS and LVHS Seniors with Post-Graduation Opportunities

This Wednesday, November 9, 2022, SAISD Class of 2023 Seniors explored over 70 booths from businesses, organizations and military branches as well as postsecondary academic opportunities as part of San Angelo ISD’s Senior Day for both Central and Lake View High School. The event held on the practice field at Central High School is designed to be one more way to help all SAISD students be “future-ready” whether that future is the military, workplace, or further academic studies, and merges a college and career fair with a counselor session and required CPR training.

Ms. Kelle Green, CHS English Teacher and TexAnn sponsor, collaborates with area businesses and organizations, and colleges and universities to coordinate and lead this annual event. “We want to connect students with people who can help them make smart choices about the path they choose to take after graduation,” said Ms. Green.

At the event, students gained firsthand knowledge about careers awaiting them right here in the Concho Valley from a multitude of industries and fields ranging from Texas State Troopers and Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens to Shannon Medical Center healthcare work to realtor positions to local television media and more. The event was an engaging opportunity for senior students to network, practice interacting with professionals and hear from representatives about why they chose their particular path and what it takes to succeed in their chosen career. Many colleges and universities from Angelo State University and Howard College to options outside the Concho Valley including McMurry University, West Texas A&M University, Abilene Christian University, and Hardin Simmons University were on-site at the event providing students a chance to learn more about their programs and information on aspects like affordability, requirements and paths of study.

Seniors attending were excited about the opportunities available to them post-graduation and appreciative of being able to connect with professionals in their desired field. CHS Senior Elizabeth Clark plans to attend Angelo State University and major in Graphic Design, she reflected “This event gives me perspective of what I could be looking for and how many opportunities I have. I found a table for what I would like my future career to be, they gave me perspective on what a career in Graphic Design is day to day. Clears my mind and gives me confidence for the future.”

A senior from LVHS, Anissa Calderon, felt the event opened doors for her in her field of choice. “I explored opportunities I am interested in but also opportunities I didn't know about. I want to be a nurse, so I spoke with Howard and ASU, but I also found out I could be a nurse with any military branch. I like that there are so many paths for me to follow my dreams,” said Anissa.

At the event, the counselor session included booths for seniors to visit to provide helpful resources including career exploration to fundamentals like how to make high school transcript requests, essay and resume writing tips and information and assistance on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The event also gave our high school students the opportunity to easily complete their CPR training which is a state graduation requirement.

SAISD is committed to our mission of engaging all students in a relevant and inspiring education that produces future-ready graduates, and proud that many of our graduates go on to work in important roles right here in San Angelo, contributing to the current and future success of our community. We appreciate the community partners who participated in Senior Day who helped SAISD to provide our students this additional opportunity to pursue their own hopes and dreams.
