SAISD Hosted Swim Teams from Across Texas for Swimming & Diving Invitational Highlighted by Top CHS Finishes

San Angelo ISD Athletics proudly hosted our 59th annual San Angelo Swimming and Diving Invitational last Friday and Saturday, October 28-29, 2022 at the Gus Clemens Aquatic Center at CHS, welcoming 15 teams and over 250 competitors, and highlighted by first place finishes for both CHS Boys and Girls Swimming and a new pool record.

“I am extremely proud of the way the Bobcat and Lady Cat swimmers performed this weekend. We had plenty of fast swims including a new pool record and new school record. Going into the weekend I was confident in our girls team’s chances, and they did not disappoint. They swam amazingly in each event. On the boys side we had our work cut out for us. Even if we swam perfectly, we might still not come out on top. The boys did just enough, and we got some help along the way to tie with El Paso Franklin for first," said CHS Head Swim Coach Matt McLaughlin, who is also an alumni of CHS and swam for the Bobcats.

Congratulations to our students and coaches on these top-placing finishes by CHS:

SAISD is proud to host the historic San Angelo Swimming and Diving Invitational and support UIL programs and celebrate our student athletes while benefiting the local economy. Visitors attending the swimming and diving invitational here in San Angelo may purchase goods and services from local businesses including eating and getting gas, which also means more money from sales tax for the community.

“As has been the case for many years, the San Angelo Swimming and Diving Invitational was a resounding success due to the hard work of our coaches and parents.  The time and effort that is put in to make it a successful meet does not go unnoticed,” said SAISD Executive Director of Athletics Rodney Chant.  “We look forward to watching the continued success of our Bobcat swimmers in the next several months!”

In it's 59th year, the invitational is traditionally held at the end of October, and an opportunity for our Bobcat Swimmers to compete in their hometown.

“The SA Invite is very special to our swimmers. It is always the last Friday and Saturday of October so it’s taken on a Halloween theme. Our facility gets packed with teams and spectators surrounding the pool.  We play music during each event, and it really is a one of a kind experience as far as swim meets go. It is the one time a year that we get to compete in our home pool, so I do everything I can to make it a fun experience. Our invite also falls at the halfway point in our season, and it’s the first time where we really try to go fast. Our teams get to see where they are compared to last year, and it allows us to refocus on the remainder of the season," said Coach McLaughlin.

At SAISD, we celebrate all the ways our students are smart, and extend our congratulations to all of our Bobcat athletes who competed in the event showcasing their athletic “smartness”. The District also thanks the SAISD Athletic Department including CHS Difference Maker  Coach McLaughlin and event volunteers, for working tirelessly to host the successful event, and the many dedicated volunteers including our CHS student trainers and swim parents.

Special thanks to Charles Bryce of the San Angelo Standard-Times for sharing photography from the event. To stay up-to-date on San Angelo ISD and our athletics programs, please visit the SAISD website at www.saisd.org and follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
